  • A young student showing off her progress with the alphabet at X-SUBA's Learning Center. English is taught once a week to students whose parents can't afford to send them to school. Math and Critical Thinking are taught on two other days of the week. The children are only allowed to stay at the Learning Center for one year so as to not overwhelm the volunteers. They use this time to teach the parents about budgeting and look for sponsors to send the kids to primary school.

Critical Thinking isn't taught much in schools, as the curriculum is mostly based around rote learning and test preparation.

  • Coach Kenneth brought back some donated children's shoes from a recent trip to London. It's difficult to prioritize which children should get new shoes, but he starts with the ones who have none at all. Here Emma is the first to pick and examines his choices.

  • Netball is a very popular sport in Uganda and is usually one of the sports played during X-SUBA's Connection Day. Each Saturday, youth in the community meet at a local church to play sports and talk about life skills with X-SUBA coaches.
  • One Team - this theme presented itself throughout my time in Uganda. Even with all the different tribes and languages present in this area, they all come together to help one another survive and better themselves.
